SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Pat Quinn has lost his primary opponent in the gubernatorial race.

A campaign source confirmed to NBC that Democratic challenger Bill Daley has dropped out of the race for Illinois governor.

Daley told the Chicago Tribune that even though he had been around politics his whole life, "until you get into it, you don't realize the enormity of it".

Daley said he still believed Pat Quinn was a weak candidate who would lose the November 2014 general election to a Republican.
