SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- This week, Senate members are set to vote on a federal budget extension bill that would maintain funding for key government agencies and avoid a government shut down until late March 2013.
On Sunday, Senator Dick Durbin said that doesn't mean work to fix the nation's budget woes takes a break.
In a satellite interview earlier this week, Durbin outlined how that extension, passed last week by the House, is merely a temporary fix. It was put in place, he says, to keep things running smoothly in Washington, and avoid any budget battles during this election season.
"We need to come up with a way to move this economy forward so that we keep creating jobs, keep businesses expanding, and reduce the national debt. That means reducing spending and looking at the entire budget to make certain we stop borrowing 40 cents for every dollar we spend in Washington," said Durbin.
Durbin says Senate members from both sides of the aisle are working behind the scenes to put budget proposal together soon after the November election.
