SPRINGFIELD, Ill -- The Illinois House has unanimously approved a proposal which could eventually make it more difficult to hike the pensions of public employees.
House Speaker Mike Madigan sponsored the bill which would require a 3/5ths vote by the state, school boards and city councils in order to hike pension benefits. Illinois has a pension shortfall of some $80 million.
Both the Governor and a legislative panel are looking for solutions to the state's pension crisis. Governor Quinn's proposal could come later this week.
