PEORIA, Ill. -- 17th District Representative Cheri Bustos spoke on the importance of agriculture in Central Illinois following a tour of the Ag Lab in Peoria.
Bustos got an in-depth look at some of the high-tech research labs throughout the facility.
Experts say the labs are vital in speeding up the process of plant bacteria research.
Following the tour, Bustos spoke on her role in the agriculture committee, where she says she is working to pass a new farm bill.
"Back up just a little bit to the last session of Congress, which is considered one of the most dysfunctional sessions of Congress in history," said Bustos. "They couldn't get that passed, and that was at a time where farmers were living through the worst drought in a generation."
A more pressing issue facing Congress will be the upcoming sequestration. If Congress does not work out a deal by March 1, drastic across-the-board budget cuts will go into effect.
