Cross steps down from GOP leadership role

August 21, 2013 Updated Aug 21, 2013 at 9:36 PM CDT

The leader of Illinois Republicans in the state House is quitting the job....to make a run for state Treasurer.

Tom Cross has asked his fellow house Republicans to begin the process of selecting a successor.

Cross says in two weeks he'll make a formal announcement that he's a candidate for Illinois Treasurer.

That post is being vacated by Republican Dan Rutherford, who's
running for Illinois Governor.

Peoria Senator Darin LaHood has endorsed Cross for treasurer.
