CHICAGO, Ill. -- In 2008, then Governor Rod Blagojevich attempted to close several state correctional facilities, including the Pontiac Correctional Center.
Illinois State Treasurer Darn Rutherford says he opposed the closures then and he opposes them now. "And at that time 4 years ago, I suggested that the state and the administration look at strageic planning. Long range planning at where we are going with our state's assets. You've got facilities that are already paid for," says Rutherford. "You got communities that are already hosting them. You got employees that are already trained. And where are we going long term? Determine whether we deploy that asset in another fashion or not."
Rutherford takes issue with one closure in particular: the Tamms Super Max Correctional center which is a relatively new prison.
Rutherford says a better way to solve the state's budget issues to correct the pension system.
