SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Governor Pat Quinn formally vetoed a bill expanding gambling into the city of Chicago and the Illinois state fairgrounds.
Senate Bill 744 would also have added casinos in Lake County, Rockford, Danville and the south Chicago suburbs, as well as allowed slot machines at race tracks and Chicago airports.
The governor called it "a bad bill for the people of Illinois", saying gaming in Illinois needs strong comprehensive oversight and comprehensive ethical standards.
Quinn called on legislators to come up with a bill that meets those standards.
Vetoing the bill puts the Governor at odds with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who has lobbied for a casino.
