SPRINGFIELD, Ill -- The Illinois House Personnel and Pensions Committee approved a pension restructuring plan Tuesday afternoon. It will likely to come up before the full House Wednesday.
Republicans are arguing against the bill because it would gradually shift the pension costs of teachers, community college and university employees to local taxing bodies.
That would affect downstate school districts, since Chicago already pays the pension costs for teachers and related employees.
House Minority Leader Tom Cross argued for the cost-shifting to be separated from the bill but had no success.
