Ill. Comptroller authorizes payments for child care providers

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- As promised, Illinois child care providers will soon be seeing an influx of cash from the state.

Last week members of the General Assembly passed legislation to provide additional funding for child care services for low-income families.

Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka announced Friday that her staff will immediately distribute $8.8 million in payments to providers.

Topinka noted that while child care providers are again receiving payment, her office today has more than $4.7 billion in unpaid bills to businesses, schools, hospitals and service agencies throughout the state. When additional bills at state agencies are added in, the state bill backlog reaches an estimated $8.5 billion.
