PEORIA, Ill. -- Illinois Congresswoman Cheri Bustos is meeting with local veterans as part of her "Vets Listening Tour".
As part of the week-long tour, Representative Bustos was in Peoria Friday to talk with veterans about their priorities and concerns.
She said she also wants to make sure veterans are aware of her work in Washington to cut down on the growing backlog of VA claims and put returning veterans back to work.
"We just talked a little bit about the fact that claims that go through the Veterans Administration are taking way too long, on average it is 280 days. The veterans deserve better treatment than that," said Representative Bustos, (D) 17th district.
In April, Representative Bustos, along with Congresswoman and veteran Tammy Duckworth, introduced legislation to help veterans find jobs by improving the alignment of specialty skills acquired in the military with certifications or licenses required for post-service employment.
