Illinois House Committee vetoes soda tax

May 27, 2014 Updated May 28, 2014 at 9:02 AM CDT

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – An Illinois House Committee has voted down a proposal to add a penny per ounce tax on sugar sweetened drinks.

The bill, nicknamed the “Soda Tax”, wouldn't have just taxed soda. It would have also included things like sweetened tea, fruit drinks, energy drinks and even sports drinks.

The bill’s chief sponsor claimed the tax would raise $600 million a year to go toward under-funded Medicaid programs and to promote better nutrition.
