SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Governor Pat Quinn is calling Wednesday a victory for Illinois taxpayers as the speaker of the state House of Representatives is unsure if he will call a vote to override Quinn's budget cuts.
Those include shutting down the Dwight and Tamms prisons and juvenile detention centers in Joliet and Murphysboro.
Quinn says doing so will save taxpayers $88 million a year.
The senate rejected the plan last week but according to the Springfield-based "Capitol Fax" blog, House Republican Leader Tom Cross says an override vote is quote "purely symbolic", meaning Quinn wouldn't be forced to spend the money on prisons but only restrict him from using it on something else.
For that reason, Cross will not support a budget override if a vote is called in the House.
However, the governor cannot move forward with the closures until an injunction is lifted by an Alexander County judge.
