SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Legislation to protect moms-to-be is one step closer to becoming law.
On Tuesday, the Illinois Senate passed House Bill 8, which would guarantee pregnant women more rights in the workplace.
It would require Illinois employers to provide “reasonable accommodations” for full-time and part-time pregnant employees.
That includes allowing frequent water breaks, bathroom breaks, help with manual labor, time off to recover from childbirth and private non-bathroom space for breastfeeding or pumping.
Governor Pat Quinn has already voiced his support.
“This is a landmark bill that will end a common but often overlooked form of workplace discrimination,” he said. “The accommodations contained in this bill are simple, proper and definitely needed. They give employees peace of mind and will lead to healthier mothers and babies. And they make Illinois a better place for our moms-to-be.”
House Bill 8 has passed both chambers of the General Assembly, but needs to be voted on one last time by the Illinois House to approve changes made in the Senate before heading to the governor’s desk.
