SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Lt. Governor Sheila Simon made her candidacy official for Illinois Comptroller Wednesday morning.

Simon announced earlier in the year that she would not seek reelection for Lt. Governor. She was considering running for attorney general if Lisa Madigan decided to run for governor.

In her speech, Simon talked about how important she considers the role of comptroller and why she feels so passionately about running for the office.

"We're not paying our bills on time. Taxpayer funds are being looted by corruption and there's mistrust in our government," said Simon. "Because I want to shine a light on corruption, blow the whistle on waste and be the fiscal watchdog that we so desperately need, I am running for comptroller."

Running for comptroller could put Simon, a Democrat, in competition with Republican Judy Baar Topinka, who said earlier in the month that she plans to run for re-election.
