Representative Mike Unes (R-East Peoria) was named one of recipients of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP) Public Official of the Year award on Monday.
"I'm honored to be recognized by the Chiefs of Police," Representative Unes said. "It has been some of the most rewarding and enjoying work advocating for law enforcement issues to improve public safety in our state."
The Public Official of the Year award is given to officials who have benefited the State law enforcement and criminal justice system. Unes received recognition for his sponsorship of a law allowing SWAT and Tactical Response Teams to utilize firearm sound suppressors and his current sponsorship of a bill designed to help stop copper and recyclable metal thefts.
"We do not recall this award going to a freshman legislator," President of ILACP R.T. Finney said. "That is a testament to Representative Michael Unes having shown the highest levels of concern for the well being of the citizens of Illinois."
Also selected was State Representative Anthony DeLuca (D-Crete). Both Unes and DeLuca will be honored at a reception Thursday night at the Sangamo Club is Springfield.
