Pekin's Demetra DeMonte is the new secretary of the Republican National Committee.
Her rise to party leadership has been rapid. She first came on the political scene 10 years ago as a precinct committeeman in Tazewell County.
The state GOP elected her to the Republican National Committee two and a half years ago.
This month the party asked her to run for secretary and she won!
DeMonte calls it an awesome honor.
"When you've got the passion, energy and you've got, I believe, the right ideas on your side, you can make it happen. And, it is wonderful, isn't it, that a blue state, an Obama state, that the national secretary is from Illinois," she said.
As secretary, DeMonte is one of only four elected officials on the rnc's executive committee.
Among her duties, she will be a presenter at the 2012 Republican National Convention and call the roll.
