PEORIA, Ill. -- "Do you know what is in your food?" That was the lunchtime question in Downtown Peoria on Tuesday.
October 2 is "National Food and Water Watch Call-In Day of Action," a campaign that asks citizens to call their senators, urging support for legislation to labeling genetically engineered food.
Members of the demonstration say their focus is on Senator Dave Koehler.
Supporters of the idea say it's all about consumers having choices.
"The issue is that there is no long-term studies to show that these foods are safe for human consumption," said Peoria resident Brinklye Hutchings, "so, we're working to get these genetically engineered foods labeled so we as consumers can have a choice."
Senator Koehler responded by saying, "I welcome the input from the public on this important consumer issue. I always appreciate people sharing their views as it helps me represent the district. I will look into possible legislation on this issue."
