WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In light of the sequester cuts that are causing furloughs for thousands of federal employees, President Barack Obama is giving part of his salary back to the U.S Treasury.

The White announced Wednesday that the President will return 5-percent, about $1,700 a month, in a show of solidarity with federal workers.

The move will be retroactive to March 1, the day the cuts started to kick in, and will remain in effect for the rest of 2013.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is also taking a salary cut equal to 14 days' pay, the same level of cuts that other Defense Department civilians are being forced to take.
