EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- A local political leader is making national news.

State Representative Mike Unes, (R) 91st Dist., made a surprise appearance on the "Tonight Show" with Jay Leno Wednesday night.

Not even Unes knew he was going to be on the show!

He says he was watching Leno Wednesday night, when suddenly, he started talking about copper thefts.

That's when Unes saw footage of himself addressing the recent Lincoln Tomb copper-sword theft, this time as the star of Leno's parody.

"Completely unexpected, and it was a pretty surreal experience," said St. Rep. Unes. "We would have never guessed that Leno was going to do a parody on this issue, and it was a really funny parody, but I think it was a parody on an important issue. Hopefully it will bring light to this important issue, and we can get it passed real soon."

Representative Mike Unes introduced a bill last month to curtail copper thefts.

Although it didn't pass in the veto session, he says he hopes to bring it back to the General Assembly early next year.
