GERMANTOWN HILLS, Ill -- A heated debate ensued Monday night in Germantown Hills surrounding the termination of Ann Sasso, their village clerk.
At the special village board meeting dozens of residents, past trustee members and mayors said that Sasso has served the community for more than twenty years. Many called her cooperative and helpful.
After public comments Village President Kenny Mitchell gave reasons for her removal from office. He said first she submitted an untruthful statement, second she was untruthful when questioned about it, and third Mitchell said she failed to keep accurate minutes at several meetings.
"Because the village board requires complete trust of the village clerk, because honesty and accuracy record keeping are a part of the heart of the clerk's duties. Miss Sasso's dishonest written response to the specific specifications are grounds enough for her removal as village clerk," said Mitchell.
The board voted 5 to 1 to remove Sasso from her position.
Residents said they were stunned.
"...Everything you want a village clerk to be. So that's why I think there was such shock in this room that they would summarily dismiss her in a public forum on her behalf, for reasons that appear to be sketchy where there seemed to be a reason to compromise the problem and fix it," said Paul Herzog a resident of Germantown Hills.
Monday night the village board appointed Gregory Seefeldt as interim village clerk.
