PEORIA, Ill. -- A different group of local students got a chance to cast ballots on Tuesday even though they are not of voting age.
Quest Academy middle school students have learned about the electoral college in recent weeks, and today they cast mock ballots.
Using social studies, English, math, and reading the students conducted research on Presidential candidates.
Tuesday morning, they began voting and just before school dismissed, they gathered in the gym to hear the results.
"It's a lot of things I didn't know and once I got into it and learned it, then it became really interesting," said fifth grader Jada Hughes.
"The whole point behind this was to encourage children to dig a little bit deeper about democracy, what it means," said a Quest Academy Teacher. "They know that there's political parties but we wanted to do something that would really involve the entire school."
The winner of the Quest mock election was Barack Obama.
