EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- President Obama and Governor Mitt Romney held a debate Monday morning in East Peoria...well, sort of.
East Peoria Central Junior High students staged a mock debate and election at the school.
It's part of an effort to encourage students to learn more about the governmental process.
Teachers say it's never too early for a good civics lesson.
"The election has probably dominated the news for over a year now and its important for them to be in the know for what's going on and I think they are very well informed citizens," said 8th grade history teacher Danielle Van Meenen. "I would put them up against a lot of people that are going out to vote."
After the debate, teachers at East Peoria Central Junior High are giving cross curricular election themed lessons to encourage students to become informed citizens.
