SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The Illinois Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that Governor Pat Quinn can move forward with the closure of several prisons and juvenile detention facilities.
According to the Chicago Tribune, in the ruling, the court ordered an Alexander County judge to dissolve a preliminary injunction that stopped Quinn from making the closures.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees sued to prevent the closures arguing they would make the prisons more overcrowded and endanger the safety of workers.
A union spokesman was not immediately available for comment Tuesday evening.
Slated for closure are the prisons in Dwight and Tamms and juvenile detention centers in Murphysboro and Joliet.
