BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Illinois Wesleyan University professor and former McLean County Board Member Tari Renner announced his candidacy Monday for Bloomington Mayor.
Fifty-three-year-old Renner said that while the local economy has improved and the city's finances have stabilized, new leadership is needed to develop a short and long term vision for the city.
"The next mayor is going to be able to go above the questions of what we can afford today and ask what can we become tomorrow," said Renner. "At this point, we need to be investing in our city's infrastructure, that is, our roads and our transportation. we need to put investments in those projects today."
This is Renner's second time running for Bloomington mayor. In 2009, he lost to incumbent Steve Stockton by 15 votes. It was the closest race in the city's history.
