SPRINGFIELD, Ill -- The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced Thursday that road work will be suspended where possible this Memorial Day weekend to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

IDOT has also provided advance notice of lane closures that will aid motorists' travel plans and boost safety.

"Memorial Day weekend historically marks the unofficial start of summer, with thousands of motorists expected to hit the road, joining family and friends in commemorative festivities," Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider said.

Starting 3 pm on May 25, IDOT will suspend all non-emergency road work for the holiday weekend and open up all lanes where possible through midnight, May 28.
