WASHINGTON, Ill. - Washington residents should be prepared for a major road closure.

Staring Monday, Business 24 will be closed at the railroad viaduct.

Crews will repair pavement under the viaduct that has been severely damaged by Mother Nature.

In fact, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) says that this past winter alone caused three years worth of damage.

"It’s somewhat unusual to take steps like this for emergency repairs. However because this was such a harsh winter, we're seeing emergency projects like this popping up,” said IDOT Operations Engineer Jen Rudzinski.

IDOT is hoping to have the road reopened by Memorial Day weekend. Until then, drivers are encouraged to use the marked detour, which will take them onto North Cummings to Kruger road onto Main and back to Business 24.
