PEKIN, Ill. -- FEMA still is coming up short on the number of people registering for disaster aid compared to the number of those affected by the tornadoes in Tazewell County.
Only a handful of people showed up to a community meeting Tuesday night in Pekin.
Of the 1,600 people affected by the tornadoes locally, around 500 still need to apply by the January 27 deadline.
"There may be some people who are waiting for the holidays, they're caught up in things that are going on in their families right now and so they're putting it off until after the holidays or after the new year," said Deanna Frazier, FEMA representative. "But we urge people not to wait."
Registering with FEMA also makes you eligible for low-interest loans from the Small Business Administration.
