There are 33 units in the apartment complex where Al Marri lived in 8 years ago. He, his wife and 5 kids crammed themselves into a 2–bedroom basement unit of the Edgewood Apartment complex in West Peoria. Maurice Alouan didn't manage the property back then, but he does now.
"It's alarming that that can happen," Alouan told News 25, "but it did happen and I don't know anything more than I've seen in the news."
On Monday, Al Marru will appear in U.S. District Court in Peoria to answer to charges he helped support terror, and conspiracy. Alouan says a tenant like that is a landlord's worst nightmare.
"We do a thorough background check on prospective tennants. That entails a criminal background check, employment verification, we check with previous landlords and do a credit check."
The person who now lives in Al Marri's old apartment declined to speak with us. No doubt they, and Alouan, are hoping that next week's trial doesn't turn Edgewood into a tourist attraction.
"I would hope they let it die and deal with it in the courts rather than in the media instead of making a circus out of the nice quiet community that we have created here," said Alouan.
