Ameren Illinois has activated its Emergency Operations Center due to the possibility of heavy snow throughout central and southern Illinois.

Due to the snow accumulation and the high winds, Ameren is preparing for some down power lines and power outages.

The utility says it is important for people to stay clear from downed power lines and to call Ameren Illinois at 1-800-755-5000 if you see one.

Ameren has placed its personnel and associated utility contractors on alert.  The utility says its first priority will be to correct power outage problems first at hospitals and other critical facilities without power.

Ameren suggests that if you have a family member with a medical condition that requires constant electricity that you make arrangements for that member to be in a safe place.

Make sure that your cell phone is charged or that you have a phone that does not require electricity, like a cordless phone does.

If your lights go out, make sure to check that your neighbors also are without power. Also check your panel box for a tripped circuit or a blown fuse. If the problem is not in your panel box, call Ameren to report the outage.
