A Chicago man was sentenced to 48 years in federal prison today for his part in a large drug trafficking ring in the Bloomington-Normal area.

Eric Cheek of Cicero was convicted in February.

His arrest was part of Operation Prairie Eagle, a federal-state effort to smash drug trafficking in McLean County.

In all, 22 people were indicted but court records allege that Cheek was the ringleader.

Police say he oversaw the distribution of hundreds of pounds of marijuana and large amounts of cocaine from Chicago to central Illinois beginning in 2001.

He could have received life in prison based on his conviction.
