PEORIA, ILL -- 6 year old Joelle Bloms of Ridgeview Elementary had her golden locks cut today in front of the entire student body.

The first grader made the big cut to donate to a local hair loss program, which benefits children with serious illnesses.

Five Senses Spa and Salon is organizing the drive as a result of their adult hair donation success.

Spa stylist Amanda Masching explains why they chose to do the donations directed toward children, "We just thought it was a great things, we had a trickle of people wanting to donate their hair. We thought, 'This is going somewhere,' so let's see what else we can do with it. So Ponytails with a Purpose, and here we are."

Adult and children donations are being accepted, and cuts must be a minimum of 8 inches.

As an incentive, Five Senses is offering a complementary facial treatment for donations of their children's hair to the program.
