After 30 years on the job, the Chillicothe Police Chief has officially stepped down.
The Chillicothe City Council approved Steve Maurer's resignation Monday night.
Maurer was not at the meeting, but Chillicothe Mayor Troy Childers called the former police chief a friend and a hard worker.
Mayor Childers says Maurer has been dealing with personal problems, as well as pressures related to his job.
Last Tuesday, Maurer was cited for DUI after a Peoria County Deputy pulled him over for not having lights on his trailer.
In September of last year, Maurer was arrested after a confrontation with his estranged wife, but those charges were dropped.
Sergeant Richard Mark is acting as interim chief until a new one is hired.
"I'm looking for superman," said Mayor Childers. "I don't know that I'll find one, and it'll be hard to fill Steve's shoes, even though he's had problems, it will be hard."
Mayor Childers says he's in no hurry to find a replacement chief.
So far, there are a handful of applicants from both within and outside the Chillicothe police department, including Peoria and Chicago.
