Some local high school graduates captured the spotlight this evening.

They were formally introduced to the public during the Debutante Ball at the Hotel Pere Marquette in Peoria.

This is the 50th year for the event and former debutantes returned to celebrate the golden anniversary. Scholarships were awarded to some participants.

Jordan O'Conner, a former participant and the 2009 Debutante Ball King said, "It paid off the rest of my tuition. I don't think if I wouldn't have gotten this scholarship that I would have went to college."

2008 Queen Amanda White talked about what it took to pursue a difficult academic program.

"Having that drive and knowing what you want, and you can do anything. It doesn't matter where you come from. it doesn't matter if you're from the south side of Peoria or if you're from Dunlap. All that matters is you know what you want, and just go for it," said White.

The ball is open to any high school graduate in the Peoria area.
