A local family of a fallen marine left central Illinois Thursday morning for the trip of a lifetime.

The Miss American Pageant is flying the Durhams and 19 other families in the United States to Las Vegas to watch the pageant live Saturday.

April Durham and her two daughters lost their father, a marine, nine-years-ago.

They will spend the week at the Planet Hollywood Hotel attending VIP events, shopping sprees and makeovers.

Durham says while that is all nice, she is most excited for her daughters to meet others who have lost their fathers to war.

"It means a lot to us to have the chance to bond with other families that are just like us," said Durham. "I also think it is important for the girls to know their sacrifice to the nation is very much appreciated."

The Miss America non-profit organization "Got Your Back" is paying for the experience.
