Former McLean County Sheriff dies

Former McLean County Sheriff Steve Brienen died today at the age of 72.

Steve Brienen had been a Bloomington Police officer when he was elected McLean County Sheriff in 1978. He went on to serve another twenty years, leaving the Office in 1998, but later went on to serve the Colfax and LeRoy Police Departments, finally retiring in 2005 due to health problems.

Brienen had been battling cancer.

He was a Air Force Veteran, and taught Criminal Justice at both Lincoln College and ICC.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter and three grandchildren. McLean County Sheriff Mike Emery said that Calvert and Metzler Memorial Home would handle funeral arrangements.
