At approximately 6:52 Sunday evening, Fulton County police responded to a truck accident that severely injured the driver.

Police say the truck had been traveling west bound on County Highway 17 when the driver struck a parked motorcycle and pushed through an 8 foot construction barricade.

The vehicle traveled approximately 50 feet before becoming airborne and landing on the "I" beam of an unfinished bridge across the Spoon River.

The motorcycle was thrown between two "I" beams and into the river.

After the truck slowed to a still on the bridge, the motorist exited through the driver's side door and fell nearly 25 feet to the rocks below.

Rescue units were called in and the truck driver was transported by Life Flight to OSF Hospital in Peoria.

Fulton County deputies cited the driver, 52-year-old Fred McKown of Ellisville, with failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, failing to obey a traffic control device, and for driving under the influence of alcohol.

McKown remains at OSF and the accident is yet under investigation.

Authorities say damage done by his truck will prolong the bridge's finish date.
