The Midwest Food Bank launched its "harvest for the holidays" campaign Monday, a way for area farmers to donate a part of their yield to Tender Mercies Meals.

Tender Mercies is a pre-packaged chicken and rice meal made with Illinois corn and soy products offered by the Midwest Food Bank.

The campaign is partnered with The Illinois Farmer's' Bureau, News Radio 1470 and Classic Country Radio 1290.

Larry Herman, Peoria's Midwest Food Bank Director says the community and farmers' support this year is greatly needed.

"There is an extreme amount of stress measured by the phone calls we receive and the request of donations and food donations that we receive throughout the state," said Herman.

Herman says about 30,000 more people need donations this year compared to last year.

Farmers can make corn and soy donations at their local elevators by December 13th.
