PEORIA, Ill. -- Local groups working with veterans are excited about the national initiative "Hiring Our Heroes," designed to help service members get jobs.

The Veterans Outreach Center in Peoria and the Peoria area Chamber of Commerce are among several collaborators joining the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to participate in a hiring fair for service members.

Rich Glavin of the Veterans Outreach Center said there has been a highly mobilized effort among service agencies to make sure that vets, including those without access to the Internet, can get information about the event.

"The cooperation of all the other veteran service organizations in the community is what really makes it a good event," said Galvin.

To date, the Hiring Our Heroes program has helped more than 10,000 veterans find jobs.

"The beauty of this is we hear there's a need in the employer community for highly skilled technical employees and our nation has put a lot of money into training people in the military and many of them have pretty high tech skills, lots of discipline. They can be very good employees," said Rob Parks.

The event will take place at the Peoria Civic Center July 12th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
