March 7th is Casimir Pulaski day, a holiday observed in honor of the revolutionary War officer.

In Chicago, members of the Polish-American community and Governor Quinn were on hand to honor the American hero.

Pulaski fled Poland and came to the United States where he fought along side General George Washington for the freedom of this country.

"And that is really what we are commemorating and honoring today. Casimir Pulaski believed in democracy. He believed in freedom and liberty both in Poland and right here in the United States of America," Quinn.

In 2009 Casimir Pulaski was made an honorary American.
