A mystery is solved....the Ukranians are blamed...and a new sign has to be painted.

All of that because of a relatively simple blood test.

We say "relatively", because getting blood from a hippopotamus can be about as easy as blood from a turnip.

Let's meet our cast of characters....

Zookeepers at a zoo in Latvia renamed one of their Hippos after a somewhat embarrassing discovery.

Yes, Funtiks was renamed Funte, after finding out their male hippo was female... twenty years after his/her arrival.

At least zookeepers now know why the other hippo never got pregnant.

The Latvians blame the error on the Ukrainian zoo where they bought the hippo --saying they were told the animal was a male.

Apparently, unless you're another Hippo, male and female differences can be pretty subtle.

Plus, they're very aggressive if disturbed.

Zookeepers said they're not going to purchase a male hippo.

The two females get along and they don't want to ruin their friendship.
