Conditions were perfect this weekend for the British Snail Racing Chanmpionships. It was raining. Just the sort of thing racing snails like.

That's assuming snails actually "think" of anything but eating and mating.

A downpour delayed the opening race - idea speed-snail conditions.

The rules are simple.
*People bring their own snails. Each is given a number because snails pretty much look alike.
*The field of snails is set in a track with two circles.
*The first snail to reach the outer circle wins.
*The distance is 13 inches if a snail travels in a straight line. Some do, some don't we are told. Others get distracted, and may decide to mate.

The record time of two minutes was posted by "Archie" ten years ago.

This year's winner "Zoomer" was just one minute 32 seconds off the record pace.
