Authorities are investigating the death of a man who was hit by a train early Tuesday afternoon.

According to Tazewell County Coroner Dennis Conover, 32 year old Karl Heskett was headed west on train tracks near Route-8 in East Peoria about 12:30 Tuesday afternoon when he was struck from behind.

"The gentleman was walking down the middle of the track, he was bundled up for the cold," said Conover. "I think he had earphones on. They tried to get his attention, they were going in the same direction and they couldn't get stopped in time to keep from hitting him."

Conover said Haskett may have been on his way to or from work but he adds it is too early to determine why the victim had been on the train tracks.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
