For decades it's sat as an empty lot in the city's 'heart of Peoria' neighborhood, but Sunday it became a permanent tribute to a family's beloved wife and mother.

The 'heart of Illinois' neighborhood association named this property on the 1500 block of North Linn Street 'Dovie Park.'

Dovie Roberts' died of cancer in 2005.

Her husband Robert donated the lot after he learned owning it disqualified him for medical assistance.

The couple's daughter says the park for neighborhood children is the perfect symbol of her mother.

"She was kind, generous. This is what she would want. I appreciate the neighborhood association for making the neighborhood association for making the neighborhood safer to live in. I like it," said Nancy Sintas.

Family members say they plan to add to the park's landscape in the future, starting small with a bench.
