Playtime is gaining more meaning in Peoria with new additions planned for Glen Oak Park.

The Park District and the Junior League of Peoria have joined forces to create a new children's museum in connection with the Peoria Zoo.

The historic Glen Oak Park pavillion will be completely gutted and restored to house the new PlayHouse Children's museum. The Peoria Zoo is also in line for some improvements. Other plans include a new welcome area and parking lot between the two attractions.

Park District Officials say the changes will enhance learning for children through playtime.

"Their play is their work. It's very meaningful to their growing up. If play is nothing but sitting in a chair and watching TV or playing an electronic something-that's fine-but you need variety. You need more," said capitol campaign co-chair Carlotta Bielfeldt with the Peoria Park District.

The park district and the Junior league are still looking for funding to make this project a reality, $8 million in fact.
