Big R has opened its doors in Pekin and employees say business is already booming.

The retail store sells outdoor recreational supplies, such as farm equipment and hunting and camping gear.

The store also includes home products like pet food, clothes and other domestic items.

Employees and consumers say the store is a good fit for Pekin with its small town, local feel.

"It's very local: 12 stores [in] central Illinois and west central Indiana," said Store Manager Michael Noren. "I met the owner personally; it's a family owned firm. Pretty much that kind of feel, a family owned firm. I'm coming from some larger firms with 700 to 1,000 stores so it's a big different feel."

Store Manager Michael Noren says Pekin is under-served for the farm market and that Big R is what the area needs.
