PEORIA, Ill. -- A community advocate is issuing a challenge to area businesses to take a chance on hiring an ex-felon.

Wayne Cannon is the head of the Tri-County Urban League's "REXO program."

"REXO" is a re-entry program for ex-offenders.

Cannon said the program is currently short of its goal of finding jobs for ex-felons.

He also said the companies that have hired ex-offenders have been satisfied.

"We need more opportunities and that's what we're asking for. So when I say jobs, it's not just placing people in jobs, we need to know what jobs are available so we can train our people for those jobs," said Cannon. "As a community, we need to be more forward-thinking on, not just a job, we need to be more forward-thinking on the skills, what skills set our clients need."

Cannon said sex offenders are not admitted in the program.
