Illinois Senator Mark Kirk says he'll vote no to raising the federal debt ceiling unless significant cuts in spending are promised.
Kirk spoke during a tour of the Olin Hall of Science at Bradley University on Thursday.
He said the research that takes place at schools like Bradley are critical to the region's economic development. He says that research shouldn't come at the expense of balancing the federal budget.
"I think in general federal funding for most activities will go down by 10 to 20 percent, but not by 100 percent. And I think that as we cut the budgets we should emphasize education research and development because it has a huge economic upside for the country," Kirk said.
Kirk was making his first visit to Bradley and also toured other parts of the university's campus.
