PEORIA, Ill. -- It was a sports collectors dream Sunday at the Peoria Riverplex.
More than 200 items were auctioned off as part of the Peoria Park District's annual Sports Auction and Card Show.
The event featured both silent and live auctions, raffles and 40 vendors.
Collectibles auctioned off ranged from autographed memorabilia from Phil Mickelson, Gale Sayers and Sarah Palin.
Peoria Park District staff said the event is their largest fundraiser, which helps support its many youth sports programs.
"It goes a long, long way. Sports programs, they add up, get expensive pretty quickly. If you try to put the whole burden on parents it gets very difficult on them," said Nick McDuffee, Athletics Manager, Peoria Park District. "So when we can hold a fundraiser like this, it helps keep the cost of our programs down in a reasonable range so that more families can enjoy the activities that we provide."
Officials said the event usually brings in $10,000 for the park district.
