A truck driver is dead after driving his semi-tractor trailer off the road.

75-year old Donald Steidinger of Fairbury drove into a ditch near Kickapoo Edwards Road in Peoria County Thursday morning but the accident may not have caused his death.

It happened on Civil Defense Road.

According to Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll, Steidinger ran out of turning room and his rig ended up in a ditch.

She says a passerby found him at 8:45a.m. Thursday. He was lying outside his truck on his back in the ditch full of water.

Ingersoll says the miss turn may not have caused his death.

"Cause of death is unknown at this time. The possibilities are he had an underlying medical condition or perhaps even drowning could be a consideration since he was found in the ditch under water," said Ingersoll.

Ingersoll says an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Steidinger works for Whiteline Express Limited. His truck is from Associated Transfer and Storage Inc., out of Champaign.
