CANTON, Ill. -- Some local veterans took a moment Tuesday to honor those who service our communities.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1984 presented the Canton Fire Department with a Service Award Tuesday morning.

During the summer, the first responders aided the VFW when their hall filled with smoke during a wedding reception.

The incident was caused by an air conditioner malfunction.

Canton Fire Chief Keith Frank says the crew was only doing their job, but the recognition is greatly appreciated.

"It is very nice to recognized by the VFW. These guys work very hard and I am very proud of the work ethic here, and the community should be proud of them," says Chief Frank.

The veterans at the American Legion say the commitment shown by the first responders is a great illustration of the freedoms here in the US.
